The census indicates the couple has been married 15 years and that two of their five children are dead. Dora Belle Henderson died on December 1, 1951 at age 77.

John N. Alford was born in 1811 at AL.      The following note is from a posting to the Guest Book for An Arkansas Connection ... web site by Ruth Culpepper on August 8, 1999.      "i have copy of death cert. on james mathew alford, borned jan. 9, 1834, died may 26, 1914 in hot springs, ark. it lists his parents as john and melinda (Lamascana) alford. buried at liberty cem. new hope, ark. t. emaline griffen was borned in tenn. 1837, they in ark by 1840. father wade griffen, on 1840 pike co. ark. census. she married james mathew alford in ark."      This information supports the assumption that James Matthew is the son of John Alford. He was the son of David Alford and Mary Ann "Polly" Orrick.      He was enumerated with David Alford on the Morgan County, AL census dated 1830; John was shown at age 19 as a white male. John N. Alford married Malinda Lucinda Lamascus on August 25, 1831 at Morgan County, AL. by D Ballew, JP (A-195).      A John Nathaniel Alford purchased 39.04 Acres of land from the United Stated General Land Office on September 13, 1832 via Certificate 5168. This land is the Northeast 1/4 of the Northeast 1/4 of Section 8, Township 6S, Range 1W relative to the Huntsville Meridian. It is located in Morgan County, Alabama. [Could this land have been purchased by John N. the son of David? If so, it means he had established a home for himself in AL and might help explain why he and his family did not come to Pike County, AR at the same time as David, et.al.].      He was listed as a head of household on the Morgan County, AL census dated 1840. He was found in Northern District, 39th Reegiment, Page 30; John Alford 01001000001 01001, was shown at age 29 as a white male.       Also shown was one unknown female child age 5-10 and a male age 800-90 living in the household. [Could this elder male be John's grandfather, Robert?]. John N. Alford died on December 27, 1897 at Murfreesboro, Pike County, AR. He was buried at Pike County, AR.

James Matthew "Black Jim" Alford married Tenisee Emaline Griffin, daughter of John Wade Griffin and Lucinda Shook, in 1852 at Pike County, AR.      He probably stayed in Alabama with his father John N. until after the 1850 Pike County AR Census since he is not listed therein. His father did not come to Arkansas (at least not Pike County) with James.      Wade Griffen, father of Tennessee Emaline was listed in the 1840 Pike County AR Census.      Apparently James arrived in Pike County and married there within the two year period of 1850 to 1852 since we know James married Tennessee Emaline in Pike County AR around 1852.      He was listed as a head of household on the Pike County, AR census dated June 26, 1860. He was found in Thompson Township, Post Office Murfreesboro, page 11, Dwelling 79, Family 79; J.M. was shown at age 20 as a white male born in Alabama. His occupation was farmer. He owned real estate valued at $250 and personal property values at $150.      He purchased 40 acres of land in Pike County Arkansas from the United States General Land Office on 4/2/1860.      Pension application number 8792 filed in Pike County, Arkansas on August 9, 1910 indicates he served in the Civil War in Company C, Sixth Arkansas Calvary in 1864.      He was listed as a head of household on the Pike County, AR census dated June 25, 1870. He was found in Antoine Township, Redland Post Office, page 201, Dwelling 35, Family 35; James M. was shown at age 36 as a white male born in Alabama. His occupation was farmer. He owned real estate valued at $100 and personal property values at $200.      He was listed as a head of household on the Pike County, AR census dated June 22, 1880. He was found in Antoine Township, page 462d, ED 125, Dwelling 228, Family 228; James was shown at age 47 as a married white male born in Alabama. His parents were born in Alabama. His occupation was farmer. He had been unemployed for 12 months at the time of the census.      Also shown in the household:      Eliza Griffin was shown at age 21 as a married white female, sister-in-law of James, born in Arkansas. Her parents were born in Georgia. She was shown at home. She could not write.      Nancy Milligan was shown at age 44 as a widowed white female born in Arkansas. The birth place of her parents was shown as unknown.
