Sarah Ann Matilda Self (F)
b. 1852, #4801
Pop-up Pedigree

Sarah Ann Matilda Self was born in 1852 at Pike County, AR.
There is no mention of a Matilda S. Self in the 1850 Pike County Arkansas Census or in the 1860 Pike County Arkansas Census. There are two possible explanations. 1) Matilda was born and died between the two census years or 2) she is really Sarah Ann. (In the 1860 Pike County Census Sarah is shown with the initials S.A.M. which could mean that her name is Sarah Ann Matilda). It is not know at this time whether 1) or 2) is correct but current evidence seems to indicate that there is only one person. Therefore in this work we will use 2) but research continues and if evidence is uncovered to indicate the 1) is the proper situation we will change this record. She was the daughter of Forgus "Fergus" "Forgy" Self and Mariah L. Jenkins.
She was enumerated with Forgus "Fergus" "Forgy" Self on the Pike County, AR census dated September 4, 1860; S.A.M. was shown at age 8 as a white female born in Arkansas.
She was enumerated with Forgus "Fergus" "Forgy" Self on the Pike County, AR census dated June 24, 1870; Sarah A. was shown at age 14 as a white female born in Arkansas. She was shown at home. She attended school within the past year.
     Washington, Hempstead County, Arkansas
I, Samuel Williamson, Minister of the Gospel, hereby certify that on the 20th day of January, 1874, I married, at my own house, in Hempstead County, Ark. Mr. Daniel Wilson, about 35 years of age, to Miss Sarah A. Self, about the same age; both of Hempstead County, Ark. and united them as husband and wife in the manner and form usual in the Presbyterian Church; and that my License to marry as a minister was obtained from the Clerk of the Court of Hempstead County (Simon Sanders) in the year, A.D. 1857 and is recorded in the Clerk's Office in Book "O", page 15.
Given under my hand this 6th day of February, 1874.
          Samuel Williamson
Filed for record, February 7th, 1874 by R.T. Page, Circuit Clerk. Sarah Ann Matilda Self married Daniel Wilson on January 20, 1874 at the home of Samuel Williamson, Hempstead County, AR.
She was enumerated with Forgus "Fergus" "Forgy" Self on the Pike County, AR census dated June 5, 1880; Sarah A. was shown at age 22 as a single white female, daughter of Forgy, born in Arkansas. Her father was born in Tennessee. Her mother was born in Mississippi. She was shown at home. She could neither read nor write. Sarah Ann Matilda Self married Armstead T. Horn on August 5, 1889 at Pike County, AR.
There is no mention of the family in either the 1900 Pike County Census or the 1910 Pike County Census. There are many other Horn families though. It is assumed that Armstead took his bride and left Pike County.
One source indicates she had a second husband named Elijah Self. However, that source shows the wedding occurred in 1858. Sarah was only 6 years old in 1858! Since the second marriage cannot be confirmed it is not included in the formal portion of this record.

Exofficio recorder. David S. Self appeared as head of household in the census enumerated 1840 at Pike County, AR. Information was found on Missouri Township. The census indicates there was one male under 5 (Samuel); one male age 5 to under 10 (William Locke); one male age 20 to under 30 (David S.); one female age under 5 (Sarah); one female age 15 to under 20 (unknown) [was she from a prior marriage by Catherine Brown, his wife or is she a relative of Catherine Brown; more research is needed on this matter] and one female age 30 to under 40 (Catherine).
David S. and Catherine Self are not listed in the 1850 Arkansas Census. It is thought that they died between 1845 and 1850 since two of their children are shown living in households of relatives or friends. Apparently the children are orphans. It is unclear what became of the unidentified male and female that were living with David Self in 1840.
There is some speculation that David was living in Greene County Arkansas 1850 because there is a David S. Self listed in the census there. However, that David was shown as 24 years old which is at least 10 years too young to be the David S. Self listed in the 1840 Pike County Arkansas Census who would be around 35 years old. But it is certainly possible that the David S. Self in the Greene County census is related to the family of Lackey William Self. Green County, Arkansas borders the state of Missouri in the general area where Lackey William Self and his brother Lewis were known to live in the 1806 time frame.
For this record we will assume that David S. Self the father of Sarah, William L. and Nancy was dead in 1850. But research needs to continue to determine when, where and why David S. Self died.

Children of David S. Self and Catherine "Katy" Brown:
                                          Samuel Self   b. between 1835 and 1839

Daniel was not listed in the 1840 Census of Pike, Clark or Hempstead counties. He was shown in the 1850 Pike County AR Census in Antoine Township (October 29, 1850), dwelling 10, family 10. He was listed with his wife, Arkada (age 18) and two children: son, William A. (age 2) and son, Balum (Balaam, age 6). There is no further mention of Daniel and his family in subsequent Pike County, AR Census records. However, Balaam (an 18 year old male) is shown living with E.M. Orrick in the 1860 Pike County AR Census.
He was listed as a head of household on the Pike County, AR census dated October 29, 1850. He was found in Antoine Township, Page 374, Dweliing 10, Family 10; Daniel was shown at age 26 as a white male born in Arkansas. His occupation was farmer. He could neither read nor write.

Child of William Daniel Self and Rebecca Cooke:

                                              Pop-up Pedigree

Nancy Self was born on March 1, 1828 at AR. She was the daughter of Lackey William Self and Jane ______. Nancy Self married Seaborn Reed, son of Joel Reed and Margaret Cox, on January 23, 1845 at Pike County, AR. [There are two marriage entries for a Nancy Self. This one is chosen because of the date. The other entry is believed to be that of the Nancy enumerated as 5 years old in the 1850 Pike County AR census. The entry shows a marriage to James W. Ben (Bean) on July 27 1865. It appears that the second Nancy and the unaccounted for William of the 1850 Census are siblings. They are shown living together, with their families (Nancy appears to be a widow), in Thompson Township dwelling 253 in the 1880 Pike County AR Census.].
Nancy is listed in dwelling 8 in Antoine Township in the 1850 Pike County AR Census. She is listed with her husband, Seaborn Reed (age 31), two children and a brother to her husband. The children are William (age 4) and Asa B. (age 2). The brother's name is also Asa.
Nancy is listed in dwelling 482 in Caney Fork Township in the 1860 Pike County AR Census with her husband Seaborn Reed (age 44). They are listed with 4 children W. J. (William J, age 14), A. B. (Asa B., age 11), H. E. (Hannah E., age 9) and M. A. (Mary A., age 1).
Nancy applied in Arkansas for a Union Pension after the death of her husband but was refused. In 1869 Congress pass a bill which allowed her to receive a pension.
Nancy is listed in dwelling 25 in Caney Fork Township, Murfreesboro Post office in the 1870 Pike County AR Census. She is listed as the head of household (apparently Seaborn has died). She is living with two children Hannah E. (age 19) and Mary A. M. (age 8). She is living next door to her son, Asa B.
She is listed in dwelling 19 in Caney Fork Township, Murfreesboro Post office in the 1880 Pike County AR Census. She is listed with her daughter Malissa (Mary A. M., age 18) who has married. Also living with Nancy is Mason Stinnett (age 22), husband of Mary A. M. and their son, William R. Stinett (age 1). Nancy is listed as a Widow and shown to be 50 years old. She is living next door to her son. Aca (Asa).
Nancy and her sons, William and Asa moved to Carbon, Eastland County TX sometime after the 1880 Census was taken. It is not known if her daughters moved also. Nancy Self appeared as head of household in the census enumerated June 22, 1900 at Eastland County, TX. Information was found on Page 189A, ED 59, Justice Precinct Number 5, Dwelling 330, Family 330. Nancy was shown at age 68 as a widow. Also in the household are grandsons, Cebern A. Reed and Burton Stennett and a niece, Lizer J. Walker. She died on October 21, 1900 at Carbon, Eastland County, TX, at age 72. She was buried at Carbon Restland Cemetery, Carbon, Eastland County, TX.
