Johannes Nicholas Knortzer was born on January 28, 1747 at York, York County, PA. [Other sources have the birth date as1745, 1746 and 1770. One source has the birth place as Germany but that is unlikely since his parents were already in the USA when they married.]. He was the son of Georg Christoph Knortzer and Anna Marcetha Upp. Johannes Nicholas Knortzer married Catherine Cooper Henlein, daughter of John Henlein, on August 10, 1769 at Rowan County, NC.      [Is there one Catherine or two? - One source indicates that ther were two women named Catherine that married Johannes. One was Catherine Henlein and the other was Catherine Cooper. While this is certainly a possibility most of the information I have indicates only one women, Catherine Cooper Henlein. There is one source that indicates a Catherine Conatser died in 1833 in Rowan County, North Carolina and left (in her will) all her assets to a son, Jacob. That source indicates this woman to be Catherine Henlein. This same source shows Catherine Cooper as a second wife to Johann and that she died in 1830 in Fentress County, Tennessee. There is no indication from the source as to why Catherine Henlein left Johannes (or vice versa) and ended up in Rowan County, North Carolina. The records of this era are sketchy so more research is needed to determine if there were two Catherines or just one. For now, I will stay with the majority of my sources and assume only one.]. Johannes Nicholas Knortzer died in 1830 at Sequahchee, Marion County, TN. [One source has the county as Fentress.]. His last name was also spelled Conatser [this is an "Americanized" spelling of the name and was used by subsequent generations].

Andrew Conatser was born in 1790 at TN. [One source has the date as 1780]. He was the son of Johannes Nicholas Knortzer and Catherine Cooper Henlein. Andrew Conatser married Mary Ann Blevins on November 26, 1809 at Wayne County, KY.      Andrew Connatser was in Wayne County, Kentucky by July 10, 1806 when a land grant of 61 acres was awarded to him. The 1810 Wayne County, Kentucky census shows he was still there. He returned to Sevier County, Tennessee after 1810. A Tennessee land grant which had been his father's was granted to him in 1809. Minutes of Big Pigeon Baptist Church show that Cathy Carnacher (Andrew's mother) became a member there in 1811 "by experience." Andrew and Mary Connacher became members in 1818. In March 1819 a group left Big Pigeon Church and formed Bethel Baptist Church. A list of members included Andrew and Mary Conatser.      Andrew became a Deacon at Bethel Baptist Church in July 1828 and was ordained a Minister at the same Church in May 1834. He was Pastor at Alder Branch, Bethel, Tuckaleechee and Bethany, serving both Alder Branch and Bethany before 1851.      The book, Tennessee's Pioneer Baptist Preachers, written in 1919, by J. J. Burnett, says: "Andrew Connatser was a preacher in Sevier County in the early half of the last century, noted in several ways, and particularly gifted in exhortation and prayer. He was of German descent, and could speak the German language, but was born in this country. He was ordained deacon of Bethel Church, Sevier County, 'August, fourth Saturday, 1829', and later was ordained to the ministry by authority of the same church. For a number of years he was a messenger of Bethel Church to the Tennessee Association. He was pastor of Alder Branch and other churches. In physical build he was rawboned, muscular and sinewy, a man of rare physical strength and endurance. Before his conversion, according to the custom of his day and neighborhood, he drank some, and would "treat" his associates and receive 'treats' in return, on special occasions. After his conversion, even after he had become a preacher and 'had preached his third sermon', I was told, seven of his companions undertook to get him to drink with them and to 'treat' them in the old-time way. To prove his hospitality and to show that he was not 'stingy', he yielded to their solicitations and furnished the 'treats'. But they were not satisfied; they wanted him to drink 'nolens volens', and undertook to force him. Thinking he had gone far enough on the 'two-mile' road with his persecutors, or had taken enough of their abuse to satisfy the law of 'non-resistance to evil', instead of turning the other cheek to the smiters, with his good fist he landed blows on the cheeks of about seven of his assailants, knocking them down as fast as they approached him. After that they 'let him alone, the argument of hard knocks proving effective where the gentle means of moral suasion had proved a failure'.      "For many years before his death Andrew Connatser lived in pioneer style in an old house in Sevier County which had been used as a fort in fighting the Indians. It had holes in the sides, corresponding to the portholes of a ship, through which the whites could poke their guns and fire in case it was necessary to defend themselves from the Indians.      "In 1851 he was pastor of Tuckaleechee Church (Min. Tenn. Association). He was also pastor of Bethel and Bethany churches. He married a Miss Mary Blevins. He and his wife both lived in Kentucky before coming to Tennessee. He has a number of living descendants in Sevier County. "      The will of Andrew Connatser, dated November 4, 1862, lists his wife Mary Ann, four sons Daniel, Amasa, Andrew, and Reuben, and five daughters Polly Hearst, Sarah Long, Catherine Thomas, Emma Romines and Martha Webb. His son, Daniel was his executor. According to the third record book of Bethel Church, he died November 2, 1862, 18 days after he wrote the will. Andrew Conatser appeared as head of household in the census enumerated 1810 at Mason County, KY. Information was found on Page 252. 00201-0130100. His last name was also spelled Conatcher.      He was listed as a head of household on the Sevier County, TN census dated September 13, 1850. He was found in 12th Eastern Subdivision, Roll 895, Page 417, Dwelling 441, Family 441; Andrew was shown at age 60 as a white male born in Tennessee. His occupation was Baptist clergy. He owned real property valued at $500.      He was listed as a head of household on the Sevier County, TN census dated July 14, 1860. He was found in District Number 4, Harrisburg Post Office, Page 409B, Sheet 64, Dwelling 408, Family 407; Andrew was shown at age 70 as a white male. His occupation was farmer. He owned real estate valued at $800. His personal estate was valued at $1360. He died on November 22, 1862 at Sevier County, TN. [One source has the date as 1800]. He was buried at Bethel Cemetery, Sevier County, TN. His last name was also spelled Knortzer. His last name was also spelled Connatser. His last name was also spelled Knetzer [in 1810 Mason County Kentucky Census Index].
