____________________________________________________________________________ Thirty-two years ago tomorrow the Pike County court house and the Pike County Courier were destroyed by fire. No insurance was carried by either - all a total loss - including the public records of the county. If we are correct in our memory, cotton was worth about 4 cents per pound and remained at near this price for two years thereafter. Corn was scarcely saleable from the fact that no money was here to buy it. Common labor was 50 cents and skilled labor 75 cents per day. Best sugar was about 20 lbs. to the dollar, coffee 10 lbs., sack of flour 40 cts., and a good suit of clothes could be bought for $5. ____________________________________________________________________________ Pike County Courier, Volume 39, Number 9, March 4, 1927, page 3, column 3. ____________________________________________________________________________ David Kelley 1997
