Subject: Giles Kelly on Ship Passenger List
I am not researching Giles Kelly but I found the following information and
thought I would pass it on. I just happened to be browsing on the following
website:
Irish Passenger Lists
http://freespace.virgin.net/alan.tupman/sites/irish.htm
On the first ship passenger list, for the St. George, I found Giles Kelly
listed. I am not researching Giles, but I know that others on the Kelley
List have posted messages about him.
St. George - London - Waterford - Maryland - Oct 7, 1677
Following is the passenger list for the St. George, a merchant ship that
sailed from Waterford, Ireland to Maryland (don't know what port) in 1677,
carrying 180 passengers.
"Oct. 7 [1677] Portsmouth. Ralegh Hull to Robert Yard. This morning sailed
from Spithead the St. George of London for Waterford and thence for
Maryland, wind N.E."
On November 1, 1678, John Quigley, a merchant captain, not the captain of
the ship, appeared before the Secretary of Maryland and applied for land
warrants for transporting 180 settlers into the province on the ship St.
George of London. Following is the list of settlers. The original spelling
is duplicated, along with the original order of names.

Virginians - The Family History of John W. Pritchett
Introduction
Although he is a Texan, all of John Pritchett’s ancestral lines extend into
Colonial Virginia. This site, the equivalent of a 4,200-page book, is
devoted to the presentation of his Virginian heritage. It was last updated
Tuesday, 17 January 2006, and is still in process, so check back for
updates.
Allied Family Topic KE
KE Giles Kelly (-1786)
Although I am not a descendant of Giles Kelly, some of his descendants
married into my family. Consequently, I have devoted Allied Family Topic KE
to his family. Giles Kelly appeared in the Colony first 10 July 1745 when
he secured a patent to 301 acres in Brunswick County on the south side of
Waqua Creek next to John Scoggin and Tabb. James Petillo had assigned this
tract to Giles.
Giles Kelly ... came to Virginia ... was living in Brunswick County on the
south side of Waqua Creek as early as 1745. The records of Prince George
County, Charles City County, and Lunenburg County identify no Kellys ...
name appeared on the pages of the vestry book of St. Andrew’s Parish ...
was apparently a Protestant ... marked documents with a “T” “X” or “/” ...
name of my wife appears in no records ... had perhaps as many as 9 children
... was "sick and weak" when (will) prepared ... near the end of 1785 ...
executors were two sons and ... son-in-law Joseph Browder. The Browders
lived on Waqua Creek near (his) plantation and Joseph was married to ...
daughter Susanna ... dead within three months and, as requested, executors
freed (his) "Negro woman slave Fanny."

Notes: How were Land Patents issued in the 1600's? From the Library of
Virginia's "VA Notes" on Headrights: "In order to encourage immigration
into the colony, the Virginia Company, meeting in a Quarter Court held on
18 November 1618, passed a body of laws called Orders and Constitutions
which came to be considered "the Great Charter of privileges, orders and
laws" of the colony. Among these laws was a provision that any person who
settled in Virginia or paid for the transportation expenses of another
person who settled in Virginia should be entitled to receive fifty acres of
land for each immigrant. The right to receive fifty acres per person, or
per head, was called a headright. The practice was continued under the
royal government of Virginia after the dissolution of the Virginia Company,
and the Privy Council ordered on 22 July 1634 that patents for headrights
be issued." Cavaliers and Pioneers: Virginia Land Patents by Emily Croom,
November 1998: "... in the records of the old Virginia Land Office, housed
since 1948 in the archives of the Library of Virginia ... 140-plus volumes
of records fall basically into four groups: colonial patents and grants;
deeds issued by Thomas Lord Fairfax, proprietor of the Northern Neck,
beginning in 1690; grants by the Commonwealth of Virginia after 1779; and
grants of Northern Neck lands after the Revolution. The long-established
idea that all English land was held by the Crown also governed distribution
of land in colonial Virginia, first through the Virginia Company of London
under its royal charter (1607-1624) and then through the king’s officials
in the colonial government (1624 forward). The year 1624 marked the
revocation of the charter of the Virginia Company and the beginning of
royal administration of the colony. The patent was the instrument by which
land was transferred from the Crown to an individual. The same principle
governed the distribution of federal land from the United States government
to private owners from the late eighteenth century forward. During the
early colonial period, Virginia settlers qualified for patents under
basically two systems: headrights and treasury rights. In the seventeenth
century, most of the patents were issued under the headright system. The
London Company and then the Crown allowed persons who paid their own
passage to the colony to obtain fifty acres each and an additional fifty
acres for each person whose way they paid ... These headright claims could
be held for months or years before being used or could be transferred to
another individual, or assignee ... All we know for certain is that the
patentees and the headrights were in Virginia by the date of the patent.
Headrights included persons of all classes and stations: gentry, nobility,
yeomanry, merchants, students, indentured servants, relatives, family
servants, and, until 1699, Negroes. In 1699, the government renewed
treasury rights as a method of obtaining land without bringing in settlers.
Under this system a person could purchase fifty acres from the government
for five shillings. This program accounted for most of the Virginia patents
issued in the eighteenth century. The law required that the patentee, in
order to keep his land, had to settle the land within three years and pay
an annual quitrent to the crown, one shilling for each fifty acres owned.
Settling was accomplished by "seating and planting." Seating meant building
a house and keeping livestock; planting meant clearing and cultivating the
required number of acres, at first one acre per fifty and later three of
each fifty owned. Fortunately for researchers, most land patents from 1624
forward survived, at least long enough to be copied into the patent books
as we know them. This process of transcription began in 1683, and it is
these copies we read in the land office records. Some of them are written
in that wonderful seventeenth century style handwriting, with its
"backward" "S" and "old style" capital letters. The preliminary documents
created in the process of obtaining the patent (certificates or warrants,
surveys, and plats) no longer exist, unless the county kept a record of the
survey. These valuable records now exist in three forms: books, microfilm,
and computer database available on the Internet. The books, Cavaliers and
Pioneers, are, in 1998, a five-volume set of abstracts covering patents and
grants from the earliest to 1749. Two more volumes are planned. Usually,
the abstracts give the patentee’s name and patent date; the size and
location of the land, including adjoining neighbors; and, when applicable,
the names of the persons brought into the colony whose passage qualified
the applicant for headrights. The later abstracts also may mention the kind
of patent being issued: new land, old land, part new and part old,
resurveyed land, marsh or swamp land, lapsed land, or escheat land. Lapsed
land was land that, once patented, had not been settled within the required
three years and had reverted to the crown. Escheat land was land whose
owner had died without heirs or, on rare occasions, had been convicted of a
felony. The published books have thorough indexes that offer the researcher
a variety of options in using the abstracts. Most genealogists use the
indexes to identify ancestors by surname and given name, to find their
patents, or to learn where they are mentioned in patents of other people.
For example, ancestors who had their passage to Virginia paid by someone
else may be listed among headrights or "transported" persons. Ancestors may
also be listed as adjoining landholders in a neighbor’s patent. The indexes
also facilitate the study of "neighborhoods" when we want to study the
cluster of an ancestor’s relatives, neighbors, and associates. Since the
abstracts note the bodies of water which form boundaries for much of the
patented land, researchers can look up these features in the index and
discover other landowners along the same bodies. The index covers creeks,
branches, rivers, swamps and marshes, ponds, and springs, as well as roads
and paths, counties, parishes, plantations, towns, and any other geographic
names in the land descriptions. Researchers may well want to begin with the
abstract books to identify any ancestors who are included. Then, in Volume
4, pages xv to xxxvi, are the forms used for the different kinds of patents
(escheat, resurveyed, new land, etc.). It is helpful to photocopy the one
appropriate to each ancestor’s patent. It is both interesting and wise for
us as researchers to look at the "originals" on microfilm; they are the
primary source. Since some of the microfilmed patent books are faded, torn,
or otherwise difficult to read, the photocopied formats and published
abstracts facilitate our reading and understanding. The patents read much
like deeds. They give the name and often the residence of the patentee, the
number of acres in the acquisition, its county and boundary descriptions,
the former patentee if applicable, and the patent date. Like deeds, the
patents also spell out the rights and privileges that go along with the
land, including "hunting hawking fishing fowling and all other profits
commodities and hereditaments whatsoever ... to the same ... belonging or
anywise appertaining." The documents also name any headrights attached to
the transaction. The complete microfilm set at the Library of Virginia
encompasses patents from 1623 to 1948, of which Clayton Library (Houston)
has 12 rolls, covering the period 1623-1730. Each roll of microfilm
reproduces one or two of the original patent books. Most of the patent
books begin with indexes. The index entry gives the patentee’s name, the
number of acres, and the page number where the document is found. From the
Library of Virginia home page on the Internet (http://leo.vsla.edu),
researchers can access databases for the Northern Neck grants (1690-1874),
copies of grants not called for (1639-1860), original patents and grants
(1728-1933), index to land patents and grants (1623-1980), patents (1623-
1774), index to land patents (Vol. 1-42), index to Charles City and Prince
George County surveys, and abstracts of patents and grants by county,
including some counties now in Kentucky and West Virginia. From a surname
index, a searcher can read abstract cards for the patents and, if the
user’s computer has the capability, images of the patents themselves. This
database is an important one of a growing number of "real research"
opportunities on the Internet. In Virginia, the "Ancient Planters" and
adventurers were the earliest arrivals who came between 1607 and 1624 and
who, for us, largely remain nameless. So many had died from hunger,
disease, accidents, and a 1621 Indian massacre that by early 1622 it was
estimated that fewer than a thousand were left. Most of these survivors had
arrived after 1616, and some were landholders. The introduction to Volume 1
of Cavaliers and Pioneers lists known Ancient Planters who arrived mostly
between 1607 and 1616 and were still living in 1624. The land patents form
a remarkable record of immigration to colonial Virginia, especially since
passenger lists and other records of immigration are rarities before 1820.
They are also a valuable tool in the study of ancestors’ land transactions,
holdings, and neighborhoods. In Houston, we are fortunate to have access to
all three forms of these documents at Clayton Library.

I'm looking for any and all information on Giles Kelley Sr. of Brunswick
County, Virginia.
This is all that I know:
1. Giles Sr. had at least four sons, Samuel, (James), William and Giles
Jr., and one daughter, since he had a son-in-law Joseph Browder.
2. Giles Sr.'s will was apparently signed on December 19, 1785, witnessed
by Thomas Stith, Joshua Lucy and Robert Lucy, and was probated on March
27, 1786.
3. His son, Giles Jr., married Martha DeJarnette on February 11, 1796 in
Madison County, Kentucky. Martha was the daughter of Daniel DeJarnette
and Judith Johnson.
Does anyone know anything more, such as his wife, dates of birth and death,
or any more of his descendants?

There is no record in Brunswick County of the marriage of Joseph Browder to
----- Kelly. Giles Kelly mentions Joseph Browder as his son-in-law. Before
Virginia became a Commonwealth and made her own laws, persons wishing to be
married woulc have the intention announced from the pulpit three
consecutive Sundays. Following marriage by the minister the record was
supposed to have been recorded. Unfortunately no such exists for Brunswick
County. Therefore many marriage must be proved by a will, deed, or other
document. Person could be married by Bond, but this involved money.
Consequently there were few of these.

I have a real interest in your family of Giles Kelley and Sara Lightfoot. I
researched a family periodically for several years that settled in
Brunswick County, Virginia (Giles and Sarah Kelley) and was hoping to find
a connection with my fourth great-grandfather Giles Kelley born in Virginia
and thereafter in Tennessee, Illinois (1804) and Arkansas (1815). It is
possible he may have been in North Carolina prior to Tennessee. His known
children were: William, Elijah, Sampson and Polly. He died in Arkansas in
1827. There were Lightfoots that settled early in Arkansas in the same
vicinity (Clark County) and time period. I would appreciate a reply from
you.

Dear Tim,
I am very interested in the family of Selah Wall & Giles Kelley. Is it
possible you may have more information about them? Did John Wall leave a
will in North Carolina and (in what records) is Giles Kelley mentioned by
name you have found? A reply will be appreciated.
Sincerely,
David Kelley

Halifax County North Carolina Genealogy Links
In 1758 the residents of Edgecombe County petitioned the Governor and the
Colonial Assembly requesting that the parish of Halifax be granted the
status of an individual county - having functioned along with St. Mary’s
Parish as the two original Edgecombe County parishes since its creation in
1741 from the southwestern section of Bertie County. Bertie County was
formed from the western extension of Chowan Precinct (west of the Chowan
River) in the year 1722, and was even earlier, an undefined part of the now
extinct original Albemarle County 1664-1668. All territory within the
boundaries of Edgecombe County north of the Fishing Creek and Rainbow Banks
on the Roanoke River - approximately 711 square miles - was officially
designated as Halifax County on January 1, 1759.

Subject: Re: Giles Kelley, Great Swamp, Halifax County, North Carolina
To: a0009792@netzero.net
Hello David Kelley:
I am Wanda Kohlmann (flyfishw) and posted that message in 2003 regarding
Giles Kelly.
I am researching the GROVES surname. I have loads of info on them beginning
abt 1793 with a Joseph Kelly GROVES born in ? Jones Co., North Carolina.
I will spare you a lot of time----but this Joseph Kelly GROVES had three
sons, all carrying the middle name of Kelly:
John Kelly Groves 1813 Duplin Co., Magnolia, N.C.
William Kelly Groves 1815 Duplin Co., Magnolia, N.C.
Joseph Kelly (sometimes with S.) Groves born 1817 in
Duplin Co., N.C.
There has to be a tie with the name Kelly ?
So I started looking and found a Giles Kelly with a Robert Kelly Groves
together on a Halifax Co. North Carolina document. Coincidence? I don't
think so as my research shows people name their children, or get married to
their neighbors and carry these names through the family.
Anyway, there was a Robert Groves appearing in the same county (Duplin) as
my Groves' and I wondered if there was a connection. Brother/uncle? This
Robert Groves may be the same as the Robert Kelly Groves I found in Halifax
Co. ... There's that Kelly name again.
I wonder if there is a connection!
Here is what I found in Halifax Co.
Date: 1760
County: Halifax, NC.
Series (in N.C. Archives): Granville Proprietary Land Office; Land entries,
Warrants, and plots of Surveys.
Call # MFR
Land Entry dated February 6, 1760, 700 acres
Descriptive data: Great Swamp & Halifax Co.
Under personal names both Giles Kelly and Robert Kelly Groves are listed.
Not much information, but perhaps Giles Kelly and Robert Kelly Groves were
neighbors, friend, kin? I found this online by going to the North Carolina
Archives. I do not have a full copy of this document, but wonder how the
Kelley's and the Groves' relate.
What information do you have on Giles Kelley?

Description:
Edgecombe County, North Carolina was formed in 1741 from Bertie County. The
county seat is Tarboro ... Edgecombe was an established, relatively
affluent county, and many of it residents later moved west and south,
particularly to Tennessee, Alabama, Arkansas, and Florida. Because of its
relative prosperity, people traveled frequently and often owned property in
several counties or even states. This database is abstracted from a book
published by the Tarboro Historical Society in 1881, with an addendum in
1920, called Early Families of Edgecombe County, North Carolina, Its Past
and Present. The book is divided into two sections: the first is a general
history of Edgecombe County, and the second is a biography of about 2,000
families in the area ... The book covers approximately 280 years and
roughly five or six generations. There were a relatively small number of
families at any one time, and even fewer names ...

Welcome To

Arkansas
Don,
As you were speaking of how your family started as an O'Kelly, I have lost
my line of Kelley's back in Virginia. My Kelley line has been researched
since 1969 and many records gone over by a David Kelley who lives in Texas.
Most of my family went to the South (Arkansas ) and stayed in that area. My
GGGG (fourth) Grandfather was Giles Kelley born somewhere in Virginia. He
died in 1827 in Wolf Creek, Clark (Pike) county Arkansas. Giles' wife is
unknown but his wife was born in Virginia. Children are Polly Kelley spouse
William McFadden (McFaddin), William Kelley born 17 Dec 1794 Tennessee died
14 Feb. 1869 Wolf Creek, Pike, Ark. Married 14 June 1814, Madison county,
Illinois to Rececca McMahan, Sampson Kelley nothing known except family
moved to Texas, Elijah Kelley born 14 Sep 1800 Jackson county, Tennessee. I
have been working on my wife's family but David Kelley is not well and has
had to stop looking for our Giles Kelley. There is another Giles Kelley out
there but not ours. Maybe some day I will find the right connection and
find where my family came from.

History
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
KELLEY
One of the very early pioneers of southwest Arkansas was Elijah Kelley. He
was born in Jackson county, Tenn., in (1800), and came to Arkansas with his
father in November, 1815. They located on Wolf Creek, in what is now Pike
county, but all that country was embraced within the geographical limits of
(Clark and) Hempstead county when the Territory was organized. Their
stopping there was purely accidental. They started out from (Illinois)
to go to Texas, but they became water-bound at Wolf Creek. It was a
beautiful valley - a modern Arcadia - and old man Kelley, believing that
he might go further and fare worse, gave up all idea of pushing on to Texas
and located there. A man by the name of Halifield, who was then 70 years
old, and had been living there several years, sold the Kelleys the first
corn they consumed in their home. They paid 12 1-2 cents a pound for bacon
the first year of their residence. There were then (1815) just six settlers
on Wolf Creek and the Antoine, and the same number in what is now Clark
county. At that time Christopher Anthony, William Grayson and Stephen
Vaughan were the only settlers in the country west and south of the Little
Missouri. There is today a stream near Prairie d'Ann known as Vaughan's
Creek, which was named after Stephen Vaughan. He was the first white
settler in that whole region, and must have located there somewhere about
1810.
Elijah Kelley had (sixteen) children born to him, (most) of whom grew to
maturity and married. He has living ... over two hundred descendants. He
was for more than fifty years a minister of the Campbellite or Christian
church. He occupied many positions of trust. He was a delegate to the
Constitutional Convention of 1836, and outlived every member of that body
except Gen. G.D. Royston. He also served in the State Legislature, and was
for several years County Judge. He was a man of great personal dignity, and
was endowed with the strictest integrity and the purest and simplest
christianity. He was plain and unassuming in his manners and simple in his
mode of living. While he was a man of no great acquirements in learning,
Elijah Kelley possessed an extraordinary fund of common sense, and was
always an ardent Democrat. His brother, William Kelley, who was his senior
in years, settled and lived within a few hundred yards of Elijah. He, too,
was a Campbellite preacher for more than ahalf-century. He was County Judge
of Pike for several years. He was gifted with phenomenal memory, and
possessed the extraordinary acquirement of being able to recite by heart
the entire New Testament. William Kelley also raised a numerous family,
and his descendants are scattered throughout Southwest Arkansas. William J.
Kelley, who was a lawyer, and for a long time Clerk of Pike county, was his
youngest son. All of the younger Kelleys were proverbial for their probity
and many of the male members of the family were preachers. Rev. Samuel
Kelley, at present, I believe, living in Howard county, who served in the
Legislature in 1852, and in the Constitutional Convention which passed the
ordinance of secession in 1861, was the eldest son of William Kelley. He,
too, is a Campbellite minister, and has preached the Gospel for more than
forty years. He is a man of strong practical sense and sterling integrity,
and commands much respect. Until within a few years he lived in Pike
county.

March 24, 1937 Delight, Ark.
Dear Niece, was glad to hear from you, hope to see you someday. Tell your
Mother and Father I wish I could see them. Tell them to come to see us
sometime, we are feeling very well. John is not able to work. Hope this
find(s) you all well. I hope you can make this all out. I can't hardly see
to write. I have done the best I could not having any records. You write to
Sarah Sparks, Delight, Ark., (she) is Sallie Wingfield's daughter. I guess
she can tell you more about her grandmother and grandfather Mobley than any
one here can. I hope I have been some help to you. I hope to hear from you
again, your aunt.
Sarah J. Lamb
My father was Elijah Kelley. He was Giles N. Kelley's father. Elijah Kelley
was born in Jackson county, Tenn., Sep. 14, 1800, and they moved to
Illinois in 1804, from there to Wolf Creek, Pike County, Ark., 1815, where
he labored on his farm until his death in August 26th, 1884. My mother's
name, Elizabeth Sherfield, the Newton was on her mother's side. She was
born April 22, 1824, if I am correct she married Brinley, he lived about 2
years and died. She was quite young when father married her. She died Feb.
14th, 1905. This is all I know about her. I don't know anything about her
people. I think she came from Crowley's Ridge here.
Father's first set of children.
I will give you the names of his first set of children. He was married
twice. Wesley Kelley and Polly Kelley was twins. Wesley was married twice.
I don't know (who) he married the first time. He married Patterson the last
time. Polly married John McLaughlin. Emily married Finn McLaughlin. Margret
Kelley married Milas Bagwell. Nancy Kelley married (a) Ward. Amanda Kelley
married John Cloud. Elijah Kelley, I think married a Dickson. Abner H.
Kelley, I don't know who he married. Eight of these half brothers and
sisters. I have no record of their ages.
Giles Newton Kelley married Ann Mariah Mobley. He was born 1842 or about
that time. James Ashley Kelley was born about 1844, married Landon Wilson.
Lydia M. Kelley was born about 1847, married T.H. Allison. Elias Wade
Kelley born 1850 married Josephine Kelley. William Robinson Kelley was born
July 22 in 1853. Elizabeth L. Kelley was born March 6, 1856. Sarah Jane
Kelley was born July 22, 1859 married John A. Lamb. John Kelley was born
February 10, 1862 married Alice Kirkham. You can count my age and tell how
old I am. Here we are 10 in all, all dead and gone. I am left for something
good. I hope I am able to do my mark yet.
Barbary Mobley is the mother of these girls. I don't know about the boys,
do well as I remember, that was her name. I don't know who she was before
she married. Martha Mobley wife of Elijah Mobley, she was a Fenter.
Margaret Jane Mobley wife of William Mobley. David Mobley, I don't know
about him. Julia Ann Mobley wife of William Kirkham. Leaner Mobley wife of
Gran Tarpley. Ann Mariah Mobley wife of Giles N. Kelley. Sallie Mobley wife
of Hop Wingfield.
William and Margaret had 2 boys, Jim Ed and John Buck, and they had twin
girls, their names were Delig and Nelig as well as I remember. There was a
Mog Mobley, I guess his name was Morgan, this is further back than I know
about much.

We learn with sincere sorrow of the death of another of our oldest
citizens, widely known as one of the best men. He has closed a life of
usefulness at a ripe old age and has entered upon his reward.
Died.
At his residence in Pike county, Ark., on the 14th day of February, 1869.
Elder William Kelley, who was 74 years, 1 month and 27 days old. He was one
of the first settlers of south Arkansas, having resided for more than 53
years, within the immediate vicinity of the place at which he died.
Sleep sweetly now from labors free,
Thy pilgrimage is o'er;
Til Christ appears then we shall see,
Thy face as heretofore!

Letter from J.C. Mason, Okolona, Arkansas.
We also have in Pike county, old Bro. Elijah Kelley, now eighty two years
of age, who has been living on the same farm since 1815. He was baptized
in 1824, and has been preaching since 1836. He has been a tower of strength
to the cause of Christ in this country. May God help us who are younger
to be worthy to wear the mantle of those faithful old soldiers.

Our Veterans by J.C. Mason, Okolona, Arkansas.
The other veteran is Elijah Kelley, who was born in Jackson Co., Tenn.,
Sept. 14, 1800. His mother instructed him to take the New Testament, study
it, and follow its teaching. This led him, at the age of 24, to confess the
Savior, and put him on by baptism, under the ministry of Wm. Clapp, in
Decatur Co., Ala. His parents moved to Pike Co., Ark. in 1815. In 1836,
Bro. Kelley was ordained to the ministry, and has been pretty actively
engaged ever since. He is now cultivating land that he helped his father
clear over 60 years ago (it still produces well). There is a congregation
of Disciples numbering about 150 in his neighborhood, as well as several
others in the regions round about, that were built up mainly by his
ministry. He has been a tower of strength to the cause in this country.
He still goes on horseback from 10 to 20 miles preaching, baptizing, etc.
He helped to frame the first constitution of this State, has represented
his county in the Legislature, and filled the position of county and
probate judge for several years, and is now esteemed a Christian gentleman
by men of all parties. He belongs to a noble generation of men, fast
passing away. I wonder if there will be any found worthy to take their
places.

Elijah Kelley
Below we copy from the Arkansas Standard a communication over the signature
of Geo. W. Logan, giving a few points in the career of the venerable
gentleman whose name heads this article. We reproduce it with pleasure,
because it brings to The Gazette tidings that all is well with one of the
friends of its youth, and because it corrects a report frequently published
that Gen. Grandison D. Royston is the sole surviving member of the
constitutional convention of 1836. Gen. Royston will now feel less
lonesome, and be accredited with the youth he wears so well. Mr. Kelley
lives, hale and healthy, the patriarch of five generations--four of them
his descendants and numbering over 200 souls--near Murfreesboro, Pike
county, where he has lived respected, honored and venerated, since 1815.
We think Mr. Logan is in error in dating Mr. Kelley's birth in 1780. We
believe it should be not further back than 1790. When The Gazette's eyes
last beheld him--a member of the legislature of '66--he was "a gray-haired
happy boy" of 60, to all appearance. May the shadow of his person, example
and influence remain long in the land, and may his tribe increase: Eds.
Standard: According to promise I give you and the many readers of the
Standard, a few items in reference to the old men of this county. First,
and at the head of the list in many respects, stands Elijah Kelley, Sr.,
who was born September 14, 1780; moved with his parents to Arkansas at the
age of 15 years, that is in the year 1815, and settled with his parents on
Wolf Creek, in Pike county, Arkansas, where he now resides. He is, and has
been for many years a minister of the gospel in the Christian church. He
was a member of the constitutional convention of 1836, and helped frame
the first constitution of Arkansas as a state, and has, once or more,
represented this county in the legislature, of which body he was a worthy
member. He is by occupation a farmer, and in the year 1882, raised two and
one-half bales of cotton, and enough corn to do him this year. His
children, grandchildren, great grand-children and great-great
grand-children, number over 200, and notwithstanding his age, he is quite
lively and stout.
Arkansas Gazette, May 10, 1883, page 2, column 2.

A Patriarch by E.R. Childers.
Full of years, full of honors, and ready for the Master. Elder Elijah
Kelley is one of the historic men of Arkansas. He was born in Jackson
county, Tenn., in A.D. 1800, September 14. His father moved to Illinois
in 1804, and to Arkansas in 1815, and settled on Wolf creek, in Pike
county. Bro. Kelley still lives on the farm where his father settled over
68 years ago. Bro. Kelley was a member of the first Constitutional
Convention of the State of Arkansas, and has three times represented his
county in the State legislature, to the entire satisfaction of all parties.
He has always made his living by farming, and though now in his 84th year,
last year made one bale of cotton weighing 525 pounds, picking it all out
himself. He obeyed the gospel on the 22nd day of July, 1824, and began to
preach for the Disciples about the year 1826, and organized the church on
Wolf creek, called Antioch in 1833, and has been one of its elders ever
since its organization. He has been instrumental in the conversion of many
souls and the building up of many churches around him. Almost all his
children and grandchildren are members of the Christian Church, and he has
the respect of all, both in and out of the church. I spent a night with him
recently, and it did my soul good to have him recount the conflicts of the
early years of his ministry. He is doubtless the oldest preacher today
among the Disciples in the United States, as Antioch is the oldest church
in the State of Arkansas. He is full of honors and is ready for the Master.
