                      DeJarnette and Allied Families
                          in America (1699-1954)

                                 Preface

The authors began the initial compilation of this work in 1931 while on a
trip to California. An old aunt gave some of the records and thus started
the germ that grew into a desire to have the history recorded in print.
Four trips have been made through the Middle West and South to gather
records in many counties and courthouses, as well as interviewsing a great
many descendants, visiting several ancestral homes, and writing innumerable
letters. If all of the letters that were written had been answered this
would have been much more complete. Every effort has been made to give only
facts, but it is inevitable that errors creep in.

This book is not indexed by pages, but by serial numbers which make it
easier to locate a given person. Find in the index the name in which you
are interested and note the number, then locate it on the left hand side of
the page. Under the heading "issue", all of those who are carried forward
have their serial number after the name. To locate the history of such a
person turn forward until the serial number is found on the left side of
the page.

This book has a Part One and a Part Two, because the book had been prepared
for publication. Much additional records came in later, and it was found
necessary to add Part Two, which has its own Index. The number system makes
it easy to connect the two parts.

The writers have gained much pleasure in compiling this work, not to
mention the satisfaction of having the family recorded, and on that basis
it is commended to you and the future DeJarnettes and allied families.

Dear David,

I trust you will not mind if I call you David ... I apologize also for
being so slow to answer ... I have been delayed by a number of things
though I have had my mind on this most of the time.

I will give you an outline of our lives so you will understand & maybe feel
that you know us a little.

My husband, Ralph, is 85 yrs. old & still has a large garden & drives his
pick-up. He has arthritis in his back & poor circulation in his legs & feet
which causes him to fall occasionally but fortunately has never broken any
bones. He has 9 living children & all live close except one who lives in
Alaska part of the year.

I am 76 and have 3 children. We have been married for 39 years. One of my
daughters is married to one of his sons and they also live close. In fact,
my son lives with us ... & has four children. Fourteen years ago he was in
a car accident from which he received brain damage & a broken back & spent
the 1st 4 or 5 yrs. in the hospital & nursing homes & then we brought him
home as he had improved enough that I thought I could handle him. He has no
balance so is in a wheel chair but he is quite happy & keeps busy.

So you see with this much family around there is always activity. Some of
the Grand & Great grandchildren are scattered but do get home now & then.
We have lost 3 grandchildren but have 59 living & 101 G. Grand. right now,
one girl is in the hospital having a baby. We have lots of company & of
course church activies. Since I got your letter we have lost & buried a
son-in-law.

I have decided to send you my book (DeJarnette) with a great many Kelleys
in it & hope you can gain some good information from it. You can send it
back when you are through with it.

I want to thank you very much for the documents you sent me.

                                       Sincerely,

                                       Evelyn, Mrs. F.R. Du Rette

This is a sheet I started for a man named Kelley who called me from Salt
Lake in Dec. of '76. I became ill & never continued. I cannot find his
address now. He ... was ... very anxious to trace his ancestors. I'm very
sorry I have lost his address. He didn't live there.

I have found that the DeJarnette family is involved in two separate lines
of mine that were in Ky. First, the daughter of Daniel & Judith Johnson
DeJarnette, Susannah Payne, married Edmund Wells 1815 in Madison Co. They
had a son, Jeremiah, who marrried Nancy Elder Moore; their daughter,
Margaret Wells, married John Makemson - my grgrandparents. This family was
in Pendleton Co., Ky. Next, Mosias Jones served under James DeJarnette who
was born 1777 & a brother to Susannah. Mosias named a son, James DeJarnette
Jones in 1813, b. Madison Co., Ky. This James DeJarnette Jones was also my
grgrandfather. James DeJarnette Jones married Catherine Phillips in Coles
Co., Ill.

Ann in Ks.
