Old Greer County, Oklahoma From the Plain Dealer 1898
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE PLAIN DEALER NEWSPAPER published at Altus, Oklahoma Territory by James
and W.H. Kelley. Office located on the north side of the square. Cost of
newspaper, $1.00 a year. The Plain dealer newspaper was a Republican paper
that was created to publish the land notices. The Republicans were in
national power and the Land Office job was an appointment from the
President of the United States. The land notices, by law, had to be run for
several consecutive weeks in the papers for the public to view. If there
were any mistakes or contests they were made at this time. The early papers
were filled with news from the nation; very little local news or
advertisements were in the first papers. The front page carried national
news, a continued story and a few short articles. The second page carried
the name of the paper and subscription rates and after that there was news
that they gleaned from other newspapers in the state of Oklahoma. The
political about Oklahoma was on page two. To finish the page they published
notices from the Land Office about land final proofs. When most of the land
was claimed, sometimes after 1900, the land office was finally moved to
Lawton, and both the land office and the Plain Dealer went out of business.

Old Greer County, Oklahoma From the Plain Dealer 1901
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE PLAIN DEALER NEWSPAPER published at Altus, Old Greer County, Oklahoma
Territory. Excerpts from 1901.
MARCH 28, 1901: Kizziar, R. J.W. is on the sick list. JUNE 07, 1901:
Business Directory of Altus, Oklahoma Territory. Spears & Kizziar--Barbers.
JUNE 28, 1901: At eight o'clock yesterday morning the people of Altus
assembled at the right of way on M.E. Kizziar's place in the western part
of the city to witness the beginning of the grading on the Orient road.
N.M. Crain, was the orator of the day and he waxed eloquently over the
future greatness of Altus. He was followed by Judge J.P. Orr, who told some
of the benefits that would be derived from building the road. Rev. R.T.
Williams followed him with thanks to the Orient Company. At about 9:23
Miss Ella McMahan dumped the first scraper of dirt upon the roadbed,
covering a horseshoe that had been driven in ground by John A. Blair of the
Orient Company. A happy shout of the people announced the beginning of work
on one of the greatest railroads in the world--a road that will make Altus
great.
