Arkadelphia Standard - Capt. J.C. Ray and Mr. J.P Hulsey left this place
(Arkadelphia) one day last week for Pike County, for the purpose of
capturing the desperado Ambrose H. White, charged with murder, and who
escaped custody, and has since set the authorities at defiance. They state
he was captured just before their arrival there by two brothers named Cox,
and afterward in attempting to escape, was shot and killed by one of the
Coxes. The circumstances of the capture and killing were substantially as
follows: It appears that White had been on terms of criminal intimacy for
some time past with a girl that one of the Cox boys wished to marry, but
the girl preferring White, was preparing to leave the country with him.
This excited the anger (of) Cox, and he, with his brother, agreed upon
White's capture. Being on intimate terms with him, they rode up to the
house of the girl where White was, and he, being unsuspicious of danger,
greet(ed) them kindly. He was sitting on a chair with his gun across his
lap, and while one of the Coxes engaged him in conversation, the other got
behind him, and at a favorable moment, seized him from behind and pinioned
his arms, while the other presented a revolver at his breast and disarmed
him. White then tried to beg off, promising to leave the country and not
harm them. They refused to release him. When White asked the privilege of
getting a drink of water, when on the way to the well, he broke to run, and
was shot by one of the Coxes through the body, but ran some distance before
he fell. Cox then ran up to him. When White begged him not to shoot him, as
he was already a dead man, Cox replied, "No d--n you, you might get up, so
look out for your head, here goes" and fired shooting him through the
temple, killing him instantly. The other Cox had his hands full in
mangaging the girl, who showed pluck and disposition to defend White with
her life. Pike County is thus rid of a very desperate and dangerous man,
and though his taking off was to satisfy personal revenge rather than
violated law, the people of that county have reason to be glad of it. If
Pike County can now get rid of the Coxes, it would be all the better for
it. A coroner's inquest was held on the body, and the jury returned a
verdict in accordance with the above facts.

The Rev. John Alford, a highly respected citizen of this county, was shot
and killed while standing in the doorway of his home in Murfreesboro, on
April 30, 1874. Positive proofs as to who did this deed were lacking, yet
suspicion pointed to W.R. Hall and A.H. White. Hall was arrested first,
and after preliminary examination, was placed in jail, from which he was
promptly released by his friends. He left the county, and has never
returned. White was afterward arrested on indictment and placed in jail,
but was permitted to go out under guard. He had been privately furnished
with a revolver, and one day he made an assault on the guard and succeeded
in making his escape. A reward of $1000 was offered for his capture, but
for over a year he roamed at large. In July, 1875, two of his friends, J.J.
and H.D. Cox, concluded to hand him over to the authorities for the reward,
but in attempting to secure his capture they killed him.

Then there were the Whites who settled near the Three Forks (Pike County)
... They were ... from Tennessee. Among them were John, Absalom, Moses and
Isaac ... With the exception of Moses who passed his latter days in
Montgomery county they all found a resting place beneath Pike county sod.
Isaac served as Judge of the Pike county court. The Whites have descendants
scattered through Pike, Clark, Hempstead, Howard and adjoining counties ...
Isaac White married into the Dickson family ... David Campbell married a
sister of the ... Whites ... He lived for many years in Washington
(Arkansas) ... His son Jerome Campbell had a number of sons ... (David)
Campbell died in Clarksville, Texas ...

Mr. Kelley:

... I'm trying to research my wife's family from Pike Co. Her Great
Grandfather was Ambrose H.S. White born about 1848 in Pike Co. He married
a Mary E. (?). They had two known children who were: James Franklin born 10
Nov 1866 and Mary Eliz. born 2 April 1868.

What I've heard from the White family is after the Civil war, he was killed
in a dispute and the two children were raised by possibly an uncle. Both
married and raised families here in Texas.

His father was Absolom White who in 1850 lived in the White Township area
of Pike Co.

I've not found any marriage info on Ambrose H.S. White ... I've visited the
Daisy park area and from maps believe the farm where Absolom White lived is
now under the Lake ...

                                 Sincerely,

                              Vayden Horton Jr.

Letter, Vayden H. Horton Jr., Granbury, Texas to David Kelley, 20 June
