... he finally settled permanently in Pike County, Arkansas. Alexander
Barentine was born 09 February 1817 in South Carolina. The first of his
three wives and mother of his fifteen children was Tabitha Eleanor Overton.
They were married 24 July 1837 in Henry County, Georgia ... Tabitha was
born 25 November 1818 near Atlanta, Georgia and was the daughter of James
and Rebecca (Hagler) Overton. She died near Caddo Gap, Montgomery County,
Arkansas in February, 1864. Her grave was finally located by Paul and J.C.
Barentine ... (and) a beautiful tombstone (was) erected where only a rock
stood before. In 1840, Alexander ... and Tabitha (Barentine) were living in
Fayette County, Georgia ... By 1850 ... (they) had moved ... across two
states, ... Alabama and Mississippi, to Bradley County, Arkansas. The
Barentines moved again before the 1860 census ... (and) are found in Gap
Township, Montgomery County, Arkansas. The oldest son, William, was living
with the family of William Golden in Colbath Township, Clark County,
Arkansas. While moving west a son was born in Alabama and two daughters in
Mississippi ... Alexander Barentine and his second wife, Susan, were living
in Mountain Township, Pike County, Arkansas in the census of 1870. Susan

Barentine and wife, Rebecca, were living with his son and her daughter,
Lovett Abijah and Celia Ann (Orrick) Barentine ... There has been passed
down a ... story of how Alexander and Rebecca came to marry. They were both
living with the children (Lovett and Celia) and one night she (Rebecca)
(said) ... there were so many beds to make, if they got married, there
