                        Old Citizens of Pike County.

Eds. Standard: Moses Brock was born in Grainger county, Tennessee, January
17th, (1803); he came to Arkansas in 1850 and settled on Saline Creek in
Pike county near the place where he now resides; he has been a member of
the Missionary Baptist church over 40 years. He is not only a member but a
good and pious man, having raised a respectable family; one of his sons
John W. Brock, resides in your (Clark) county. Brother Brock is a farmer by
occupation and not withstanding his age he works on his farm yet. If you
were to see him moving about you would suppose him to be about 50 years
old.

Next comes Major James Mansfield, who was born in Logan county, Ky., on the
4th day of July 1801, he came to Arkansas in 1833, and I suppose settled on
Saline Creek, Pike County, near to Moses Brock, and there for (a) number of
years he labored on his farm enjoying the fruit of his labor. Major
Mansfield, as he is familiarly called, is a worthy member of the Christian
or Campbellite church, and a good citizen.

Fine rains, cotton booming, corn improving, health tolerable good, people
happy, building new camp ground near to Saline Creek on the road from this
place to Antoine. Camp Meeting to embrace 2nd Sabbath in September. Ye
editors come up and attend the camp meeting. Yours &c.

Dear Mrs. Mansfield,

My relation to the Mansfields goes back to Dorcas, sister of James C. and
wife of William Gilmer. Margaret Jane Gilmer, daughter of William and
Dorcas Gilmer married William Mobley. Amanda Jane Mobley, daughter of
William and Margaret Jane Gilmer Mobley, married Columbus Landrum Bowen.
Mattie Belle Bowen, daughter of Columbus L. and Amanda J. Mobley Bowen,
married James Samuel McConnell. They were my parents ...

According to a transcript from the Mansfield Bible, James C. Mansfield
married Ulila Davis. She was his second wife. James C. was born July 4,
1801 in Kentucky ... Ulila Davis was born in Virginia, August 8, 1807. They
were married March 30, 1830. Their son James Davis was born November 6,
1843. He married Sarah Safronia Gould, daughter of William Bond Gould born
in New York. His mother's maiden name was Bond. These records were sent to
me by Mrs. J.S. Lavender, Shreveport, Louisiana in 1964 ... James C.
Mansfield is buried across from a small church on Highway 26 not far from
Murfreesboro, but I do not know its name. There were only a few graves ...
only a few have markers. Somehow. I seem to have misplaced the inscription
on his ...
