[The 1850 Montgomery County Arkansas Census shows the spelling of the last name as Kaufman. Census records in subsequent years have the spelling as Coffman. Apparently the family changed the spelling sometime after the 1850 census. We will use the Coffman spelling in this work.].
He was listed as a head of household on the Montgomery County, AR census dated October 29, 1850. He was found in Gap Township, Roll 28, Page 390, Dwelling 50, fanily 50; John was shown at age 50 as a white male born in Tennessee. His occupation was farmer. He owned real estate valued at $800. John Henry Coffman married Sarah Ramsey on October 8, 1857 at Montgomery County, AR. John Henry Coffman died circa December, 1858 at Montgomery County, AR.
He was the subject of the following sketch at Montgomery County: Our Heritage I, page 39,:
John Kaufman (Coffman) and his wife Terriby were born in Tennessee. They came to Arkansas from Missouri in the late 184Os. According to the Montgomery County 1850 census of Gap township they had the following children: William Henderson and James Allen (twins) born 1830 in Alabama; Benjamin W. born 1835 in Missouri; Daniel W born 1838 in Tennessee; Henry P. born 1840 in Alabama; Harrison C. born 1842 in Alabama; Robert born 1847 in Arkansas and a female, Mary Ann born 1849 in Arkansas.
William Henderson (Billy) born 1830 is the ancestor or mentor of the Hopper community Coffmans. He married Elizabeth Jane White, July 20, 1851 and the couple was married by Justice of the Peace John Tweedle of Gap township. Their children were William Newton (Newt), who married Missouri Bevil; Jasper (Jap) who married Paralee Perkins; Henry Harrison who married Frances Hopper; Mary Jane who married Isaac Tweedle and Julina (Dine) who married Jesse Williams.
William H. was known as Billy and was affectionately called Grandpap by his many grandchildren. The Coffman place is the present location of the Hughes Tracking Station between the Caddo River and Hopper. There is still sign of the Coffman homesite with foundation rocks and rocks from the chimney with walnut trees and sign of the root cellar.
Billy's brother, Harrison, was in the Civil War and fought for the Southern cause. He was blinded in a battle near Atlanta, Georgia. Billy was a Union or Northern sympathizer, but he never actually fought in the war. The brothers never forgave each other for being on opposite sides in the war.
The family had a big black horse named Lincoln and when word was received that Lincoln the President was shot, little five-year-old Jasper (Jap) Coffman ran to the barn to see about the horse, thinking the horse had been killed.
Henry and Jasper, sons of Billy, located a rattlesnake den on the south side of Gap Mountain in the Hopper community in 1877. Their father, Billy, had sent the boys into the mountain near their home in February to look for missing sheep. The boys were more interested in hunting wild animals and they investigated a cave they thought might be a bear den. The next day they returned to the cave and used a pine knot torch to go a little way inside the cave. They found a den of rattlesnakes. They killed five that day and one got away inside the cave. Each winter they killed as many as eight which averaged from six to eight feet long.
Billy moved to Perkins Hollow, where he located a mineral spring. He is said to have carried a doctor's satchel and he had an ointment for skin cancer which was said to have been handed down from the Indians. His mother was thought to be part Indian. The ointment was a secret formula and was passed on to the oldest grandson. William Jasper Tweedle, his daughter Mary Jane's son, was recipient of the formula.
The spring bears his name and he drank its waters. He would not eat pork nor very much meat of any kind because he thought it was bad for his health. His wife Elizabeth died in 1904 and he died at the home of his son Henry in 1917. Both are buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery near Hopper.
Henry H. Coffman, son of Billy, the head of the Coffmans in the Hopper community, and his wife Frances Hopper Coffman had fifteen children. She died in 1919 and he died in 1947. Both are buried in the Hopper Cemetery. Their children were Jack, Missouri, Jane, Ada, Guilford, Austin, Grace, Georgia, Ira, Frank, Claud, Delton, Devia, Floyd and Julia.
Jap Coffman died in 1935 and is buried in the Coffman Cemetery in the Oak Grove community. Newt Coffman is buried in the Hopper Cemetery. Mary Jane Tweedle is buried in the Coffman Cemetery and her sister Julina Williams is buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery, both having died in 1896 of "slow fever".
