          Pop-up Pedigree

Joseph Riley Alford was born on March 15, 1874 at AR. [the grave marker indicates the birth year as 1869]. He was the son of Joseph David Alford and Elizabeth S. "Bettie" Jourdon.
He was enumerated with Joseph David Alford on the Pike County, AR census dated June 22, 1880; Joseph was shown at age 5 as a single white male, son of David, born in Arkansas.                He was enumerated with James W. Flemens on the Pike County, AR census dated June 15, 1900; Joe R. Alford was shown as a divorced white male, cousin to James W., born in March 1874 in Arkansas. His parents were born in Arkansas. His occupation was farm laborer. He had been unemployed for six month within the last year. He could read but not write and he spoke English. There has been a question as to why Joseph Riley Alford was shown as a cousin of James W. Flemens. The issue was clouded by the fact that Joseph Riley is a half-brother to Martha Lorenda (they have the same father). James W. Flemens is the son of Alfred P. Flemens and Mary A. "Allie" Jourdon. Joseph Riley Alford is the son of Joseph David Alford and Elizabeth S. "Bettie" Jourdon. Elizabeth and Mary A. are sisters. So Joseph Riley Alford is a first cousin of James W. Flemens as stated in the census record. Joseph Riley Alford married Amanda E. His occupation was laborer at a saw mill. He worked for a wage. He rented his home. He could neither read nor right but he spoke English. He had been married twice. The current marriage was for 10 years at the time of the census.
The 1910 Pike County Arkansas Census indicates that Joseph Riley and Amanda O'Neal were each married twice. We know Amanda married James Christian in 1896.Joseph is listed in the 1900 Pike County Census as being divorced. So we don't know who his first wife might have been. It is assumed that this women was the mother of Walter "Son" (also called "Brother"). Joseph married Amanda 5 months after the birth of Walter. We think his other children were from the second marriage. The 1910 Pike County census shows one of Amanda's children by her first husband, Edith Christian.

                                                        Emma Alford (F)
                                                        b. November, 1877, #974
                                                        Pop-up Pedigree

Emma Alford was born in November, 1877. [One source shows the birth year as 1878. The 1880 Pike County AR Census shows her to be 3 years old which implies she was born in 1877. The 1900 Pike County Census indicates she is 24 years old and has been married 10 years. The 1910 Pike County Census indicates she is 37 years old and has been married 20 years. It is clear Emma (some sources have the name as Emily) was born between 1873 and 1878. If she was born in 1878 she would have been only 12 years old when she married not a very likely situation. It is possible that she was married at age 13 or age 14. And given the logistics of her birth (her brother was born March 15, 1874) it is very likely she was not born in 1873. so we will use 1877 as her birth year. There is also some question about the birth month being either November or October.]. She was the daughter of Joseph David Alford and Elizabeth S. "Bettie" Jourdon.
She was enumerated with Joseph David Alford on the Pike County, AR census dated June 22, 1880; Emma was shown at age 13 as a single white female, daughter (the census taker indicates her as a son) of David, born in Arkansas. Her father was born in Arkansas. Her mother was born in Alabama. She was shown at home. She could neither read nor write. Emma Alford married Benjamin T. Rice circa 1890 at Pike County, AR.
She is listed in dwelling 13, Muddy Fork Township in the 1900 Pike County AR Census. She is shown at age 24 living with her husband, Bengiman (Benjamin, age 38) and 3 children: Janie (age 8), Athar (age 3) and Mary E. (age 8 months). The census indicates the couple has been married for 10 years and all three of their children are still living.
She is listed in dwelling 179, Muddy Fork Township in the 1910 Pike County AR Census. She is listed at age 37 living with her husband, Benjamin T. (age 46) and 6 children: Janie (age 18), Mary E. (age 10). Lavinia (age 8), Rosella (age 7) and twin baby girls (Freda Gail and Julie Ann, age 4 months). The census indicates the couple has been married 20 years and that one of their children (Athar) is dead. Emma Alford married Frank Rice after 1910. [Did this marriage happen?].
