REMEMBERING DAYS GONE BY: New Salem Baptist Church. They participated in
many ways to help reach out in our mission to bring Jesus to Monticello.
People who have lived in or near Monticello contributed by participating in
the services and other activities of the church. Most of the early ones
moved away after months or years as they sought better possibilities of
employment or for other reasons. Some became members of the church and are
the church leaders of today. Many people from other Baptist churches
participated as they came to Monticello for a week or a day to help tell
the good news of Jesus through a Vacation Bible School or a series of
meetings or to sing or speak at one service. And hundreds of people over
the world have supported the church through prayers, instruction, and words
of encouragement. We plan to honor all in the year long 25th anniversary
celebration in 2007. Some of the major participants in New Salem Baptist
Church requested that their names not be published, a request that we have
honored. But we were saddened recently by the death of one of these
persons, and we now wish to acknowledge him. Morris Myers died in March of
this year in Hot Springs, Arkansas, at the age of 59. He and his wife,
Rebecca, were never in Monticello to see New Salem Baptist Church, but they
have been major participants in the life of the church for more than 15
years. We appreciate both Morris and Rebecca and wish to honor them this
year. The 24th anniversary of the church will be celebrated during FESTIVAL
OF LOVE II, September 8-10, Morris and Rebecca Myers will be honored as we
unveil plaques honoring them, along with two other major supporters of the
church in its very early days, Rebekah Shirley and Sue Smith, also persons
whom the church will never forget.
