Regiment, Confederate States of America, Company G.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
On December 7, 1862, a Confederate Army under Major General Thomas C.
Hindman engaged the Union divisions of Brigadier General Francis J. Herron
and James G. Blunt near Prairie Grove Church. Hindman's original plan to
strike Blunt, isolated at Cane Hill, Arkansas, was foiled by the timely
arrival of two Union divisions under Herron. Hindman bypassed Blunt at
Cane Hill on the morning of December 7, 1862, and marched to meet Herron.
The two armies collided at Prairie Grove with Hindman's men taking a
defensive position on a ridge overlooking the Illinois River.

Confederate Captain William Blocher's Arkansas Artillery Battery took their
first position in the yard of the Borden House. Blocher's four iron six
pounder guns hotly contested the Union crossing of the Illinois River. The
superior rifled artillery of the Union army, however, soon silenced
Blocher's smoothbore guns.

When Blocher withdrew he left several damaged guns behind. They became the
focal point for two Union infantry assaults that began shortly before noon.
In the first assault, the 20th Wisconsin and 19th Iowa dashed over the
crest of the ridge and past the guns into the apple orchard to the rear of
the Borden House. Here they were met by overwhelming numbers of Confederate
infantry and forced to retreat.

By 2:30 p.m. the Union situation was bleak. As the 20th Iowa moved on the
Confederate positions, artillery shells began to explode around them and,
from the hills to the northwest, troops could be seen approaching the rear
of the Union army. To the relief of the 20th Iowa, the artillery shells
were the friendly fire of the Union General James Blunt's long awaited
reinforcements from Cane Hill.

Blunt mounted several savage attacks against the Confederates until
darkness put an end to the fighting. During the night, Hindman's
Confederates, nearly out of ammunition, quietly retreated south toward Van
Buren. When the Union troops awoke on December 8, 1862, they found
themselves in possession of the battlefield.

Prairie Grove marked the last major Civil War engagement in northwest
Arkansas. Neither side gained a meaningful advantage, however, never again
would a southern army attempt to use the area as an avenue of invasion to
Missouri.
