and have been for more than 45 years ... she is the widow of Thomas V. 
Jacobs who enlisted as a soldier in the State of Arkansas during the war 
between the States in Company A of the third Regiment of Volunteers and 
continued in the service of the State of Arkansas or the Confederate States 
of Amercia until his death; and I have been told by several of his comrades 
that he was buried in Washington County, Arkansas in August of 1861 at 
which time and place he died." Payton M. Epperson age 69 years (June 21, 
1901) resident of Star of the West, Pike County, Arkansas "well acquainted 
with Thomas V. Jacobs the deceased and his wife Armenda Jacobs; that his 
first acquaintance with Thomas V. Jacobs was in the year 1850; and that he 
was present when Thomas V. Jacobs was enlisted in Dr. John Arnold's Company 
in the summer of 1861 in the Confederate State Troops; and that the company 
soon left for the north part of Arkansas; and shortly afterwards heard that 
Thomas V. Jacobs was dead." Martha Lafevers age 67 (June 25, 1901) a 
resident of Star of the West, Pike County, Arkansas "acquainted with Thomas 
V. Jacobs about 1 year before the deceased soldier enlisted ... Thomas V. 
Jacobs and Armenda Jacobs lived together as man and wife ... she was 
present on the day that Thomas V. Jacobs enlisted in the Confederate State 
Services in the summer of 1861; and that the widow has lived at my house 
the greater part of her time since the death of her husband." Capt. George

Quartermaster to haul baggage for the company near Murfreesboro, Pike 
County to Ft. Smith, Arkansas ... the Quartermaster's name was Wilson 
McGuire ... that Thomas V. Jacobs was along in Captain Dr. John Arnold's 
Company doing duty as a soldier ... that after he delivered the baggage at 
Ft. Smith he was discharged and came back home and they went on to Oak Hill 
and I heard several of the soldiers that returned tell of his death." B.R.

... "my brother Thomas Vanburen Jacobs ... (his) death was in the detail of 
helping to bury the dead men on the 11th day of August 1861 in Oak Hill 
Battle near 9 miles southwest of Springfield, Missouri. He never ever (was) 
well after that day's burial; and that I brought him back to Washington 
County, Arkansas and he died and I buried him near the place; and the 
Doctors told me that the stench of the dead bodies was the cause of his
death; that every man that was there vomited but him; and the doctors said
that if he had vomited that he would have got over it but he could not; and
I think as near as I remember he died on the 25th day of August 1861."

in regard to my mother's pension. You will notice that she is in Louisiana,
now, but this is not her home. She has made Antoine, Arkansas her home for
twenty years or more, but in January she caught fire and got badly burned
and the Dr. there, Dr. Joe Burleson, advised me to bring her here to my
home where we could wait on her until she gets well, then she will return
to Arkansas. She is not able to sign anything now only with her cross mark,
which she has done for the notary that signed the papers here in her room.
She certainly does need her pension now for (the) Dr. bill and expense
money. Thank you in advance for any consideration shown her in the matter."
Her son, T.P. Lawson. Flora, Louisiana. John L. Lawson served in Company F,
42nd Georgia Infantry.
