____________________________________________________________________________ A record of the "Old Lamb Cemetery" prepared by Jamie Pauline McConnell, Chairman Genealogical Records, Mine Creek Chapter, DAR ____________________________________________________________________________ THE OLD LAMB CEMETERY This cemetery, on a very steep, rather large, densely wooded hill was originally known as the Mobley Cemetery. It was the family cemetery of David Mobley, located on his land only a short distance from his residence. The first burials were those of his three children who died between 1820 and 1840, two girls and a boy. The mounds are still there near the three marked Mobley graves with 3 unengraved sandstones as markers. One of the girls is known to have been named Elizabeth Ann. The name of the other has been forgotten. The boy was said to have been named Morgan Cryer Mobley for the father of Barbara Cryer Mobley and after his death, the next born was again given the name of Barbara's father. The Lambs were related to the Cryers, one of Barbara's aunts having married Thomas Lamb in South Carolina. One of her sons showed up repeatedly with Thomas and Morgan Cryer, Sr. in their various moves. It is thought these Lambs (buried here) may have been his descendants. These records were copied August 11, 1968 by Don and Beverly Houck and me. Beverly is a descendant of David and Barbara Mobley through their daughter Ann. I descend through their son William. The cemetery is located almost exactly half way between Delight and Antoine, Arkansas off Highway 26 which cuts across the base of the hill. Because of the dense woods it cannot be reached from the highway. It is necessary to run from the highway and take the narrow private road that runs under the railroad trestle for about 300 feet, leave the car, jump the six-foot steep banks of a swift smooth branch, climb a somewhat treacherous, steep rocky path another 3 or 4 hundred feet and find at its end a very well kept cemetery. This private road formerly led to the residence of G.W. Tarpley and was on the farm which Leana (pronounced Lee Anna) Mobley's wedding gift from David her father. In addition to the 3 unmarked Mobley graves, there are 17 said to have been Lamb graves. David Mobley Barbara Mobley Morgan C. A strange grave and very mysterious in its implications. Because of the dense intervening woods it is not visible from the cemetery and the cemetery is not visible from it. It is a quite nice tombstone. In 1986 they published their compiled cemetery records in a 447 page book entitled "Pike County, Arkansas Cemetery Records." In its introduction is says, "Because of the age and conditions of many markers and the handwritten lists that were turned in, we readily admit that there will be some unavoidable mistakes either in dates or spelling of these names. Also, many graves were unmarked. We hope this book will assist people in tracing family trees ... or have an interest in Pike County." ____________________________________________________________________________ Surname-Name-Page BENNETT, Louisa 242; B.L.B.M. 242; DICKINSON, Evie 242, Joe 242, Joe T. 242, Joe Tot (sic) 242, Octavia 242; GEISER: infant sons (3), Josie 242, P.E. 242; GOULD: Hellen 243; LAMB: Cynthia 243, Dollie Orr 243, Josie 243, Martha 243, Reece 243, Thomas 243; MALONE: Hester 243, MOBLEY: Barbry (sic) 243, David 243, Morgan C. 243; PRICE, Olie 243, TARPLEY, G.W. 243, L.A. 243 Index by David Kelley ____________________________________________________________________________ LAMB This cemetery is located on Hwy. 26, 3 miles East of Delight twoard Antoine. I had known that my gggg-gf, David Mobley and wife Barbara were buried there, but had not known anything else on the cemetery's history. Jamie Pauline McConnell wrote, "The first burials were those of his three children who died between 1820 and 1840, two girls and a boy." David Mobley did not move to Pike County from Clark County, Arkansas until 1836, at which time he made his first land purchases from the government in sections 20 and 29 of Township 8 South of Range 23, West. Thus his name first appears on the Pike County tax lists in 1837. The Mobley early burials, prior this time, would have been where he lived in Clark County instead of in the old Lamb Cemetery. This latest addition to the site is a very important piece of history on my family (least from my stand-point it is!). I would like to know more about the book "Pike County Arkansas Cemetery Records" by the "Pike County Extension Homemakers". Where do I get a copy of said book. Also, how do I get in touch with Jamie Pauline McConnell? I understand that we have much to discuss on our common ancestors. First. The book "Cemetery Records, Pike County, Arkansas" compiled by the Pike County Extension Homemakers and published in 1986 is out of print. I do not know if the Pike County Archives and History Society has any copies left for sale. Just in case email ... pcahs@iocc.com Second. Jamie Pauline McConnell is deceased. She lived in Nashville, Arkansas when I met her in 1975 or perhaps it was 1974. She never married and was then in age, 70's at least. I do not have information when she died. I once had contact with her relatives after her death. I wanted to know what became of her research, her family genealogy collection. Thanks in advance for any assistance you may be able to provide in my continuing research of my many direct & indirect lines. Sincerely yours, Bob Mobley Reply by David Kelley ____________________________________________________________________________© Copyright 2002 David Kelley
